Flaking

Definition

Delamination of the total paint system from the substrate.

Abplatzung

Causes

  1. Insufficient cleaning of the plastic substrate
  2. Insufficient sanding
  3. Unsuitable cleaner or degreaser used
  4. Plastic part not heated before painting – this applies mainly to PU foam parts and polyamide (PA)
  5. Plastic primer or plastic additive not used

HOW TO AVOID

  1. Thoroughly clean the plastic substrate with Glasurit 541-30 Universal Cleaner for Plastics or Glasurit 700-10 Degreasing and Cleansing Agent. If the substrate is very dirty or textured, clean with a sanding pad or a scrubbing brush. Clean the substrate before and after sanding.
  2. Use recommended sanding material. Use a sanding pad, where an irregularly shaped part is to be sanded (e.g., radiator grill, bumper etc.).
  3. Clean with Glasurit 541-30 Universal Cleaner for Plastics or Glasurit 700-10 Degreasing and Cleansing Agent. Only these cleaning agents will remove any mold release agent residues from the substrate.
  4. “Heating” means eliminating the release agents from the substrate by heating the car part (for 1-2 hours at a maximum of 60°C). Plastic parts with pores must be heated before painting as mold release agents might have entered these pores during production. This applies mainly to PU foam parts. The plastic part must be placed in such a way that it will not be deformed during heating. Thoroughly clean the substrate using Glasurit 541-30 Universal Cleaner for Plastics or Glasurit 700-10 Degreasing and Cleansing Agent before and after heating.
  5. Use Glasurit 285-31 VOC HS-Non-Sanding Filler and/or Glasurit 522-10 Plastic Additive according to Refinishing Systems S 3/S 3a.

REPAIR

Remove the paintwork completely and refinish according to Refinishing System S 3. Do not use a paint stripper as this might damage the plastic!
