 With this approach, part of the fossil resources are replaced by renewable ones such as bio-naphtha or biogas from organic waste or vegetable oils. This share of biomass is then mathematically allocated to the new product line for automotive refinish products using an independently certified method. By using this approach, 100% of the fossil resources can be replaced with renewable resources.

Eco Balance products contribute to reducing the use of fossil resources and reducing the CO₂ emissions via the mass balance approach. In BASF’s mass balance approach, renewable or recycled raw materials are used when manufacturing primary chemical products and are fed into the production Verbund. The proportion of bio-based or recycled raw materials is then arithmetically assigned to certain sales products according to a certified method. For our mass balance products, 100% of the feedstock required for these products (chemical product only, excluding packaging material) have been replaced by renewable or recycled resources. All our Eco Balance products are independently certified according to the RedCert² standard (BASF certification number REDcert²-929-35372286). When reference is made to CO₂ savings per traveled kilometer, a standard CO₂ emission of 95 grams per travelled car kilometer is assumed.

References to equivalent numbers of end-of-life tires refer to a standard tire of 8.8 KG and an assumption of the available tire mass for pyrolysis and a conversion factor for the pyrolysis process.
