The history begins: Glasurit has been writing painting history for over a hundred years. Almost everyone recognises the parrot as the symbol of quality and progress. Here you can find out how the trade mark was developed and how Glasurit has kept setting new standards with product innovations. In 1888 Max Winkelmann founded a lacquers and paints company in Hamburg. Soon thereafter he also had his own paint factory.
The success began with white: His first paint was marketed under the name "Crystal White". The area of application of this white enamel, originally used for ocean liners, soon expanded. Customers for his quality products included not only the major shipyards and the Kaiser, but also the Hamburg tram transport company.
Max Winkelmann becomes Glasurit: 10 years after founding the business, Winkelmann was already making so many different products that he wished to sell them under one name. The trade name 'Glasurit' was registered over 100 years ago. The name ('Glasur' means glaze or enamel) reflects the enamel-like glaze and hardness of paint finishes and was to promise quality. The "Mandarin head" on the tin was already a symbol of high quality awareness.
The parrot sees the light of day: Around a quarter of a century after the introduction of Glasurit as a trade name the parrot was registered as a protected trade mark. Together with the logo, the parrot gives Glasurit products an unmistakable and attractive appearance. The Mandarin is still on the packaging, but no longer in the centre.
The product range is growing: Glasurit's chemists quickly acquired a reputation for the development of synthetic resin paints and enamels.
The brand grows into a new age: During the recovery period after the war, the demand for paints increased rapidly. Once again the needs of the professional customer predominated. The car industry became an even more important customer. And Glasurit's lacquers and paints were regarded ever more highly also in many countries outside Germany.
The history begins: The parrot became bolder and hence a stronger trade mark. Its shape was more harmonic and dynamic. It became the sign of a great brand in the modern sense of the word.
Metallics in car refinishing: With the introduction of 54 Line, Glasurit proved its leadership in technology. 54 Line was a real innovation being the first metallic basecoat line for automotive refinishing.
BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen: Acquisition of Glasurit-Werke Max Winkelmann AG by BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Ludwigshafen.
The Glasurit RATIO System: In 1982 the age of efficient, simple, manageable and safe automotive refinishing processes began, in the form of the Glasurit RATIO System. In this first RATIO system and subsequent additions, Glasurit products are logically and systematically matched. With the aid of these systems, all automotive refinishing jobs can be completed rapidly and at low cost.
Glasurit 90 Line: Glasurit puts one of the first water-borne basecoat systems on the market. The 1992 automechanika fair heralded the premiere of the most successful water-based refinishing system on the German and European market. As a result of first-class product quality and the simple, application-friendly handling properties intrinsic to the RATIO-AQUA System, the use of 90 Line guarantees perfect refinishing results. However, right from the start, the main emphasis was on reducing solvent contents and thereby increasing the system's environment-friendly character. In short, 90 Line is simple, economical and safe.
Glasurit 22 Line: Achieve more with less solvents! In 1995, a further step was taken towards increased eco-efficiency for bodyshops, when Glasurit 22 Line was introduced as a high-solids refinishing system for solid-colour finishes. The higher solids content means less solvent, combined with significant savings of material and processing time.
Glasurit 55 Line: 1996 saw the launch of Glasurit 55 Line, a new product for solvent-borne basecoat-clearcoat refinishing that even surpassed the product performance of the successful Glasurit 54 Line.
Glasurit RATIO Concept plus: The fitness program for bodyshops. The automechanika fair in 2000 marked the debut of Glasurit RATIO Concept plus, the comprehensive package for increased efficiency and improved workflows in workshop and management. With this package, Glasurit completed its progression from simple paint supplier to complete solution provider for all problems in and around the bodyshop. One particular highlight is Glasurit RATIO Spot Repair, the efficient, low-cost process for repairing small paintwork defects.
Glasurit 90 Line celebrates its anniversary! Since its launch 10 years ago, 90 Line has become the most successful water-borne basecoat system on the European market. Well over half of all water-borne basecoats now used in Germany are made by Glasurit. That is reason enough to celebrate this success with all European customers. A giant promotional truck was on tour in many European countries with information on water-borne basecoats and VOC legislation - combined of course with a good mix of fun and entertainment, for example the racing truck simulator. Glasurit customers are ideally equipped for the future since 90 Line helps them comply with all current VOC regulations.
Glasurit 68 Line: In the spring of 2004, the Glasurit 68 Line sets new standards in the area of commercial vehicles, both in original coating and in refinishing. As a consistent continuation of the 18 Line, the VOC compliant 68 Line exceeds everything available on the market until now in regard to efficiency, economy, and process reliability. 30% less consumption, spraying times reduced by 30%, and a 25% faster drying sound too good to be true – that’s why initially a selected pilot customer is needed to prove that the Line keeps its promises. An extremely high throughput, short waiting times, and thus a fast job completion have since spoken for themselves.
Glasurit Classic Car Colors: In 2007, Glasurit created a special service for classic car owners entitled Classic Car Colors. As a paint specialist with over 100 years of experience and one of the world’s leading automotive refinish experts, Glasurit provides useful tips and important information on all aspects of classic car refinishing.
Glasurit Refinish Competence Centre: Since 2009 Glasurit has had at its disposal at the Münster site the Refinish Competence Centre (RCC), the world’s most modern training facility for automotive refinishing. At the RCC, bodyshop employees use state-of-the-art technology as they learn the ins and outs of automotive refinishing on complete vehicles.
