Old masters at car museum: Glasurit helps to restore historic automobiles

The French National Museum Cité de l’Automobile – Schlumpf Collection houses some 560 historic automobiles. To keep the valuable collection in peak condition, the museum has agreed on a cooperation project with Glasurit. Glasurit will support the restoration of the cars in the next two years as well as a travelling exhibition of vehicles that have yet to be restored.

The French National Museum Cité de l’Automobile – Schlumpf Collection in the Alsatian city of Mulhouse is the world’s largest car museum. It houses over 500 historic luxury models and racing cars that bring automotive history to life, including the famous Bugatti Royale. 422 models in the collection are even classed as historical monuments. The foremost task of the museum is to conserve this unique collection. To do so, both the mechanical workings of the vehicles and the car bodies need to be restored at regular intervals. That’s where Glasurit enters the scene.

As one of the longest-standing paint brands for the automotive industry, and with a history and experience stretching back over more than 120 years, Glasurit shares the museum’s passion for cars and for preserving this precious heritage. So the two have now agreed on a cooperation project. Glasurit is to help the museum to restore the vehicles over the next two years and will also participate in a travelling exhibition due to hit the road in 2012 and 2013, which will show those cars in the collection that have not yet been restored.

Glasurit is the ideal partner for the museum. Its Classic Car Colors programme has made the well established paint brand the partner of choice for everyone involved in repairing and restoring old vehicles. Bodyshops using Glasurit have access to the oldest and most comprehensive colour database on the market. It comprises almost 200 000 shades that were used in the automotive industry between 1904 and 1970. Once the original shade has been determined, modern Glasurit paint technology enables a first-class match to be reproduced.

Given this passion for classical cars, it goes without saying that Glasurit is extremely proud to support the national museum in preserving automotive masterpieces for posterity.
